Narrative Set: Climate Change

The concept of climate change has received increasing focus both from the general and scientific communities over the past decade. As a concept, it is defined as a significant and persistent change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods of time which can range from decades to millennia. Climate change is a change in average weather conditions, or in the distribution of weather around the average conditions.

Inspired by both the debate as much as the data, the Narrative Set of Climate Change aims to explore the patterns of data and research surrounding climate change and the debate that surrounds the concept. Through patterns, trends, and scientific concepts, this Narrative Set aims to examine climate change through the visual representation of data and text to show that although we may understand the meanings of some of the data, there is often more to the story than what is first apparent.

Narrative Set: Binary Brotherhood

Binary Brotherhood is a Narrative Set that marries two different concepts, which philosophically share similarities.

Core to this Narrative Set is the advance of technology, most often in this Narrative Set represented by binary code. Binary code is the language of a possibly unexpected next phase in our human evolution, that of computer technology as an “enhancement” to human evolution.

Binary code represents text or computer processor instructions using the binary number system's two binary digits, 0 and 1. It is this language which is in many respects the genesis of the development of computer technology from its earliest developments.

The Narrative Set of Binary Brotherhood explores the linkages that computer technology is increasingly creating between people and the loss in many respects of individual identity that those linkages are creating.  The Narrative Set also explores the concept of technology as a new and final "religion" for humanity. The language of digital connection, binary code, is coupled in this Narrative Set with the concept of a singular, unified community – in this work represented by the monastic monk, who appears in forms throughout this series.

The monastic monk and his community function as one. Despite great advances in learning as a result of these communities particularly in the dark and middle ages, individuality was often lost due to the overpowering presence of the community.

The ominous nature of this Narrative Set aims to raise the question of whether such advances afforded by digital connectivity are worth the possible elimination of human individuality and the creation of sub-classes of humanity.

Narrative Set: The Histories

I have always been interested in history and its key events that have had long felt influences. The Narrative Set of The Histories, is influenced by such key events, many of which may not be linked, but have been influential nonetheless. Through text and visuals, I attempt to tell the story in each piece of a specific historical event.

From a historical perspective, I am particularly interested in ancient history, spanning Egypt, Rome and beyond. Many of the pieces take literature of the specific era as a back drop, and in conjunction with emotions of those events, I attempt to bring those forth through the art.

Narrative Set: After

The Narrative Set After, are the pieces of work which I have created which are 'after' works of art created by artists that have inspired me.

Historically, artists have copied great works of art to learn how the masters have created, and this is how I use this Narrative Set. I learn by attempting to copy pieces of art that inspire me by their technique, content or vision.

From what I learn in the creation of these pieces, I can then apply that knowledge to new pieces which are unique and not 'after' the pieces that initially inspired me in some manner.
