Narrative Set: After

Title: After Achilles Mourning The Death Of Patroclus (Original By Cy Twombly)

Media: Canvas, Acrylic, Oil, Wax Crayons, Pencils, Water, Tea.

Narrative: Cy Twombly has always been an inspiration to me for my own art. In particular I am drawn to his use of layering and the heavy representation in his works of both text and historical antecedent. With this work in particular I was interested in how he was seemingly able to convert depth, movement and emotion through two dimensions. I was also drawn to the work as I wanted to better understand how to achieve the depth of color and texture in the backgrounds of his pieces. In my version of his piece I achieved the variation of depth and color in the grayish-blue background by experimentation which in the end settled on the use of tea pooled on the surface of the canvas.
